PHILADELPHIA — Thirty-four years have passed since Mike Quick was one-half of what was supposed to be, and probably should have been, the best wide-receiving duo the Eagles have ever had. It was 1988. Quick had been to five straight Pro Bowls, eclipsing 1,000 receiving yards in a season thre…
NEW YORK — In what is becoming a truly historic season, Aaron Judge has joined Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Jimmie Foxx, Ralph Kiner and Ken Griffey Jr. as the only non-steroids-tainted players to at least twice hit 50 or more homers in a season. And barring a catastrophic injury…
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Steve Young was winding down from a 20-minute, enthralling phone interview on the 49ers’ quarterback dynamic when he captured his own feelings:
Officials in Pakistan are warning that more flooding is expected as Lake Manchar in southern Pakistan swells from unprecedented monsoon rains that began in mid-June and have killed nearly 1,300 people. Meteorologists predicted more rain in the region in the coming days and authorities urged villagers in the Jamshoro and Dadu districts of Sindh province near the lake to evacuate. The rising waters reached dangerous levels and posed a threat to a protective dyke and embankment, they said. The water body, located west of the Indus River, is the largest natural freshwater lake in Pakistan and one of the largest in Asia.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Dillon Gabriel passed for two touchdowns and ran for another and No. 9 Oklahoma rolled past UTEP 45-13 on Saturday for Brent Venables’ first career victory as a head coach. Venables was a full-time assistant for the previous 26 years in stints at Kansas State, Oklahoma a…
Eight people go on trial in France on Monday accused of helping the attacker who drove a truck into a crowded beachfront in Nice on Bastille Day, killing 86 people. The attacker was shot dead by police on the same night, July 14, 2016. He had driven a 19-tonne truck through holiday crowds like a snow plow, leaving a two-kilometer trail of crushed and mangled bodies in his wake. During the proceedings in a special terrorist court in Paris, survivors and those mourning loved ones will recount the horrors inflicted that night. The verdict is expected in December.
The only thing that surprised the U.S. AmeriCup team in its tournament-opening matchup was the outcome. Saturday was a regrouping day for the Americans. They opened the championship tournament of the FIBA Americas region with a 73-67 loss Friday to Mexico in Group C. Play in that group resumes Sunday, with the U.S. facing Venezuela and Panama meeting Mexico. Venezuela and Mexico could clinch quarterfinal berths with wins. The top two teams in each group, along with the two best third-place teams, go to the knockout round.

Gaza’s Hamas authorities have executed five Palestinian men convicted in separate cases of murder and alleged collaboration with Israel. The Interior Ministry said the executions Sunday meant “to achieve public deterrence and security.” But rights groups in the past have questioned fair-trial standards in the military and civilian courts of the Islamic militant group. Two of the men, both members of the Palestinian security forces, were killed by firing squad, and the other three were hanged at dawn at a security site in Gaza City. The executions were the first since Hamas put to death three Gazans who were condemned in a hasty trial of killing a leader of the group in 2017.
Chance Nolan passed for two touchdowns and Oregon State’s defense forced five turnovers in a season-opening 34-17 victory over Boise State. The Beavers, who are hoping to build on last season’s first bowl-game appearance since 2013, took control early behind their opportunistic defense and a few big plays offensively. Oregon State snapped its six-game losing streak in season openers. Boise State received a lift off the bench from backup quarterback Taylen Green, who replaced an ineffective Hank Bachmeier and sparked a second-half comeback.
Michael Penix Jr. threw for 345 yards and four touchdowns, and Washington opened the Kalen DeBoer era with a 45-20 win over Kent State. DeBoer’s debut as Washington’s head coach was highlighted by an entertaining, innovative offense that Penix — also making his Huskies’ debut — ran flawlessly against the overmatched Golden Flashes. Penix led Washington on scoring drives on all five first-half possessions and touchdowns on the first four as the Huskies built a 31-13 halftime lead and cruised in the opener. Penix completed 26 of 39 passes and his yards passing were the third-most in his career.

Matt Duffy’s bloop single in the 12th inning drove in Taylor Ward with the winning run as the Los Angeles Angels rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Houston Astros. The Angels came through on a night Shohei Ohtani reached 400 major league strikeouts but did not factor in the decision. With Ward as the automatic runner in the 12th, Max Stassi drew a walk from Will Smith with two outs. Seth Martinez came on and Astros center fielder Mauricio Dubon appeared to make a diving catch on Duffy’s ball, but first-base umpire Jordan Baker said Dubon didn’t come up with it in time. Instant replay upheld the call as the ball hit the ground before Dubon was able to get his glove on it.

Shaul Ladany survived a Nazi concentration camp and narrowly escaped the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Decades later the 86-year-old has returned to visit the two places where he narrowly escaped death. On Saturday he brought family members to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where he was imprisoned as a boy in 1944. On Monday he will participate in a joint German-Israeli ceremony in Munich marking the 50th anniversary of the killing of 11 Olympians by Palestinian terrorists. “Those that tried to kill me are not alive anymore,” Ladany says. “We are still here.”
Lane Sumner ran for 168 yards, Tommy Mellott threw a pair of touchdown passes and Montana State rolled past McNeese 40-17 in a season opener. Montana State, ranked fourth in both FCS polls, racked up 438 yards of offense despite committing two turnovers. Mellott was 8-of-16 passing for 152 yards. His 17-yard touchdown pass to Willie Patterson gave the Bobcats the lead for good, 16-10 midway through the second quarter. Mellott’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Ravi Alston stretched the lead to 33-10 in the third. Josh Matthews caught a touchdown pass for McNeese.
