U.S. charges FTX’s Bankman-Fried with paying $40 mln Chinese bribe

U.S. prosecutors on Tuesday unveiled a new indictment against Sam Bankman-Fried, accusing the founder of the now-bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange of paying a $40 million bribe to Chinese officials so that they would unfreeze his hedge fund’s accounts. The new bribery conspiracy charge adds pressure on the 31-year-old former billionaire, who now faces a 13-count indictment over the November collapse of FTX.

Elsewhere in the crypto space this week, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued Binance and its CEO Changpeng Zhao for operating what the regulator alleged were an “illegal” exchange and a “sham” compliance program. The lawsuit comes amid a broader and increasingly high-profile crackdown on crypto companies.

U.S. used DNA from a burrito to arrest man for fire at anti-abortion group’s office

Prosecutors charged a Wisconsin man with setting a conservative anti-abortion group’s office on fire in May last year. He was identified by DNA from a thrown-away bag containing a partially eaten burrito.

Hridindu Sankar Roychowdhury was charged in a criminal complaint with maliciously attempting to damage and destroy Wisconsin Family Action’s office building. The fire occurred just days after a leaked draft of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling overturning the nationwide right to abortion was made public.
