New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently announced that India will host the G20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi on September 9 and 10, 2023, as part of its Presidency. India will hold the G20 Presidency for one year, from December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023, and is slated to host over 200 meetings across the country beginning this December. The Group of Twenty (G20) is an intergovernmental forum made up of the world’s main developed and developing economies. The list of members includes: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union (EU).
According to an official, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has set a four-month timeline for the renovation of 41 roads and significant roundabouts ahead of India’s assumption of the G20 presidency in December. According to a senior NDMC official, the civic body would undertake Rs 85 crore worth of work, of which Rs 46.6 crore will be spent on road upgrades, Rs 9.96 crore on streetlights, and Rs 13.8 crore on horticulture work, for which 6 million flowering and ornamental plants will be purchased. Another Rs 5 crore has been set aside for sculptures and art promotion.

According to the MEA statement, “G20 priorities are in the process of being firmed up, ongoing conversations inter alia revolve around inclusive, equitable and sustainable growth; LiFE (Lifestyle For Environment); women’s empowerment; digital public infrastructure and tech-enabled development in areas ranging from health, agriculture and education to commerce, skill-mapping, culture and tourism; climate financing; circular economy; global food security; energy security; green hydrogen; disaster risk reduction and resilience; developmental cooperation; fight against economic crime; and multilateral reforms.”
