GenScript’s new facility is set to improve support for scientists in the Asia-Pacific region with shorter delivery time and local collaboration.
AsianScientist (Feb. 18, 2022) – International biotechnology company, GenScript Biotech Corporation, opened a new protein and gene manufacturing facility in Singapore on February 10, 2022—the company’s first production facility outside of the United States and China.
To support local scientists as they develop new therapeutics, drugs and vaccines, the US$15 million, 30,000 square foot facility will manufacture recombinant proteins and synthesize genes. With a regional presence, GenScript will be able to deliver products more quickly and more reliably.
“Our new manufacturing facility harnesses state-of-the-art equipment to produce essential elements of biopharmaceutical translational research in a high-throughput manner,” said Mr. Johnson Wang, president of GenScript’s Asia-Pacific Division at the launch.
Already up and running, the plant currently employs about 50 staff and is expected to create an additional 100 jobs for local scientific talent. These include roles as laboratory technicians, scientists and logistics personnel.
Prior to the launch of the new facility, GenScript already played a significant role in Singapore’s research and healthcare sector. In fact, during the COVID-19 pandemic, GenScript worked with the Duke-NUS Medical School and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research’s (A*STAR) Diagnostics Development Hub (DxD Hub) to develop and manufacture the first neutralizing antibody test kit for COVID-19.
Looking to further strengthen such valuable ties, GenScript and A*STAR’s DxD Hub signed a memorandum of understanding at the new facility’s launch event. With the signing, both organizations agreed to further collaboration—from developing local medtech talent to manufacturing diagnostic kits.
“Firms are attracted by Singapore’s deep talent pool, strong IP protection, robust manufacturing capabilities, thriving research base and innovation ecosystem,” said Minister of State Mr. Alvin Tan, honorable guest at the facility’s opening ceremony. “In turn, their presence further strengthens and drives the growth of our biomedical sciences ecosystem.”
