The death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II came as a shock for everyone. This time for especially painful for Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg.
Penning down an emotional note, the Grand Duke and Duchess looked back at their fondest memory of Queen Elizabeth while expressing their condolences to the country and the royal family.
Their strong bond does not come as a surprise as they also happen to be relatives, a fact that not many are aware of.
Grand Duke Henri is the eldest son of Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte. He ascended to the throne on October 7, 2000.
Even before becoming the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, he had been closely working to monitor State affairs. After studying politics at the University of Geneva he was commissioned as a military officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England.
In 1981, he married Grand Duchess Elizabeth after they met during their University studies. They have five children, Prince Guillaume, Prince Félix, Prince Louis and Prince Sebastian, and also Princess Alexandra. They are also proud grandparents to three grandchildren.
In an emotional post that was posted on their social media channel, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria thanked Queen Elizabeth for her support.
The post read: “The Grand Duchess and I have been deeply moved and saddened when we learned of the passing of Your dear mother, Her Majesty the Queen.”
They also looked back at the support that was provided by the UK to Grand Duchess Charlotte and “her son, my father, Jean during World War 2.” The tribute further noted: “Their safe haven in London helped to preserve the very existence of my country in these dark times.”
As per Royal Central, they are related because of their shared relative, Princess Carolina of Orange-Nassau. While the family tree is long, they are not as close in relation as one would expect as the history of their connection dates back centuries ago.
