After Kamala Harris was elected VP in 2020, applications to her law school alma mater, University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, surged 33%—far outpacing that year’s national 13% increase in law school applicants. UC Law San Francisco even rose three spots in the U.S. News rankings to No. 59 in 2020 but has since fallen to No. 82.
Harris joins a long list of presidential hopefuls with a law degree on their resumes, but she’s an outlier in having graduated from a school not in the U.S. News & World Report’s top 14 ranked schools. An influx of applicants would allow UC Law San Francisco to be more selective about whom it accepts. Law dean David Faigman said he expected the connection to Harris, as a presidential candidate, to provide “a greater bump going forward” to the school’s reputation. Karen Sloan has more on the possible Harris boost.
