The number of people suffering from pollen allergies has reportedly increased significantly over the last ten years, affecting developped countries in particular.
It is estimated that more than 20% of the European population suffers from allergies that affect the respiratory system, including an estimated 15% that are allergic to pollen, with a notable upward trend.
Researchers believe that by 2050, close to 50% of the population may suffer from allergy-related diseases. They believe that environmental factors and climate change contribute to this trend. Since the warming of the planet increases the time that pollen remains airborne, it simultaneously increases the time that allergy sufferers are affected.
Hay fever symptoms include a burning sensation in the eyes and nose, repeated sneezing, as well as an itchy throat. Allergies can further provoke tiredness and concentration issues. Some people may even develop asthma due to the pollen.
There are several ways of counteracting the symptoms, which range from household remedies to medication. Allergy sufferers are advised to wear masks when pollen concentration is high, to keep car windows up while driving, and to spend time outside in the early morning or late evening hours.
