Upon returning from holiday island Usedom, a Luxembourgish traveller triggered the airport bomb alarm after security discovered a grenade-shaped lighter in the woman’s suitcase.
The incident happened on Saturday at Heringsdorf airport in Usedom, a popular holiday island divided between Germany and Poland.
After local security identified what looked like a grenade in the suitcase of the 78-year-old woman from Luxembourg, she was asked to remove the item. Although she explained that it was a “funny souvenir” that she wanted to bring from Poland, security still alerted the de-mining services from the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern just to be sure.
Once at the scene, the de-mining team quickly confirmed that there was no danger, but still confiscated the grenade-shaped lighter. The entire operation lasted for about 90 minutes, during which passengers of two landed planes were forced to wait aboard, while travellers waiting for take-off were brought to a nearby restaurant.
