Vancouver Officials to Review Policy Protecting Views in Effort to Create New Housing
A Vancouver policy that protects the city’s mountain and ocean views may be reconsidered to create space for much-needed housing and job space. Next week, City Councillor Peter Meiszner will propose reviewing the policy, which has been in the books since the late 1980s when past city planners worked to preserve 26 view corridors. Now, some are worried that a change to the policy could permanently degrade the scenic landscape of the city. “But is it really worth preserving a second or two of those views for vehicle drivers when it’s impeding the delivery of rental housing or any kind of housing in a major housing crisis?” Meiszner said. Portland, Oregon, Castle Sells for $2 Million at No-Reserve Auction
A castle-like home in the woods of Portland, Oregon, has sold at auction after first being listed eight years ago. Once asking $7.175 million, the home, dubbed Blackberry Castle, headed to auction with no reserve and sold for $2 million to California real estate broker Rick Edler. The mansion spans 13,000 square feet, and the gated property’s 6.4 acres include a vineyard with pinot noir and chardonnay grapes. Edler said he and his wife plan to “change some of the parts [of the house] that don’t speak to us as much” and live in the estate part time, with the possibility of living there full time in the future. Newcomers Are Fueling Luxury Housing in Raleigh, North Carolina
Out-of-town buyers are fueling a surge of luxury-home demand and building around Raleigh, North Carolina, according to people in the industry. A mixture of work-from-home policies and the affordability of the region continue to attract new residents to the area, where “they can get a lot more for their dollar,” said Connie Allen, head of design and new construction at Raleigh Custom Homes. A typical $3 million new build in Raleigh spans more than 5,000 square feet, though strong demand and rising building costs are driving prices higher, experts said. ABC 11

A former auto repair shop that was turned into an industrial-style family home in Washington, D.C.’s Capitol Hill neighborhood has come to the market for $1.35 million. Built in 1930, the brick building had been a stable, carriage house and a repair shop for horse-drawn buggies in the mid-20th century.
