A U.S. Senate-passed bill that would add 66 new judges to understaffed federal district courts nationwide would increase government spending by $349 million over a decade, according to new estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.
Those estimates were contained in an analysis released late last week by CBO, Congress’ nonpartisan fiscal referee, after the Senate unanimously endorsed what would be the first major expansion of the judiciary since 1990. Nate Raymond has more.
