New Balance went from ‘underdog’ to $5 billion fashion favorite
|
Richie Roxas got the appeal of New Balance sneakers when he bought his first pair in 1994.
“I found New Balances to be the most comfortable,” Roxas tells CNBC Make It. “They were sort of like this underdog brand. And I gravitated towards them because not a lot of people were wearing them.”
At the time, his sneakerhead friends were more focused on Nike releases. Most ordinary shoppers seemed to think of New Balances, with their chunky aesthetic, as “dad shoes.”
Now, the brand is seen as fashion forward, and it’s growing faster than Nike and Adidas. It’s become a staple in the closets of celebrities and star athletes like the NBA’s Kawhi Leonard and Jamal Murray.
In 2022, New Balance raked in $5.3 billion in revenue. The company’s CEO, Joe Preston, has said revenue could hit $10 billion “over the next few years.”

How to Talk to People: The No. 1 phrase to avoid when you’re angry
|
Certain people or things will inevitably make you angry. And while anger is normal, how you express it can help or hurt the situation.
As a life coach, Stef Ziev teaches people how to communicate effectively, including during conflict. When expressing anger, you should “give it voice, give it a name and acknowledge it,” says Ziev.
But there are some things you should not say when you’re upset, especially to co-workers and your boss, she warns.
The key phrase to avoid when angry is “you make me feel,” says Ziev. Instead, she suggests naming the behavior that caused those feelings and describing the emotions you felt after it happened.
Try saying, “When you do this behavior, then my experience is X, Y and Z,” Ziev says. “The intent is to never make it personal.”
For example:
- Don’t say: “You make me upset when you don’t take my advice into consideration during meetings.”
- Opt for: “When you don’t consider the advice I suggest in meetings, it’s difficult for me and I feel undervalued.”
