YouTube is one of the most popular video streaming platforms available at the moment. While the platform itself might be free, thanks to ads, Youtube does need you to watch those ads in order to get revenue.
This is why the platform has implemented this feature, to keep users active on the browser tab that’s running YouTube. However, it can be quite annoying to have to switch back every so often just so you can keep a particular video playing.
In this article, we’re taking a look at why this happens and the solutions you can take to solve the problem.

Why does YouTube show the “Are you still watching?” prompt?
It’s imperative for YouTube for its free users to actively stay on the current tab that the site is open so they can serve mid-video ads. If you switch tabs and run YouTube in the background, it’ll automatically pause whatever it is you’re playing to ensure that the user stays on the site for longer.
That’s where the message comes in handy. By asking users if they’re still watching and pausing the currently playing video, they can force the user to keep coming back to the tab and catch any ads that YouTube might be serving with the video.

How to stop YouTube from asking: “Are you still watching”?
There’s not a lot you can do here as the feature is implemented from the server’s side, however, there are a couple of ways out.
Buy YouTube premium
This is the only guaranteed way out of this situation if using an extension doesn’t work for you. Buying YouTube Premium (formerly YouTube Red) will let you play YouTube in the background without any problems on your PC or on the YouTube app.
Browser extensions are pretty handy especially when it comes to things like ad blockers and related features. In this case, you can use a browser extension to get around the automatic pausing. We recommend checking out AutoTube or YouTube NonStop.
Here’s how you can install the extension in Chrome:
Step 1: Open the Chrome web store in your browser and search for the AutoTube – YouTube nonstop extension.
Step 2: Click on Add to Chrome.
Step 3: Click on the Add extension option in the pop-up dialogue box.
