What if Picasso had been born a girl?
In honor of Women’s History Month, three curators—Judith Barr (antiquities), Elizabeth Morrison (medieval manuscripts), and Emily Beeny (drawings)—discuss the role women artists played, or rather, were allowed to play, in their areas of expertise.
Three stories that show how women have created throughout history

Gardeners of counterspace
In the 1980s, the Georgen-Parochial-Cemetery in East Germany, once the resting place of well-off citizens of the Weimar Republic, evolved into an island of artists, outsiders, nature lovers, and those waiting to emigrate to West Germany—a group of “unusual and crazy birds of all kinds,” as they called themselves.
How an art collective created community in the heart of 1980s East Berlin

Getting your period in the Middle Ages
There are few things in human history that have been constant. Among them are death, taxes, and of course…periods. You asked us how people with uteruses dealt with menstruation in the Middle Ages, and Getty medievalist Larisa Grollemond has responded with several fascinating facts. Note: This article was the inspiration for the newest Getty exhibition, Blood: Medieval/Modern.
Why ‘that time of the month’ was just as uncomfy as you think

The Vesuvius Challenge: Resurrecting a Library of Ancient Scrolls
Saturday, March 16, 4:00 pm Getty Villa and online
Hundreds of papyrus scrolls from the Roman Villa dei Papiri were carbonized by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in CE 79. Since their rediscovery in the 1750s, their fragile condition made it nearly impossible to open and decipher the works of ancient literature they contained without damaging them—until now. Hear from the team that spearheaded a groundbreaking challenge to develop AI that could make the ancient ink visible, and celebrate with the grand prize winners.

Text from PHerc.Pars. 4 (Institute de France), unseen for 2,000 years. The resulting image was produced by the Vesuvius Challenge Grand Prize winning team of Youssef Nader, Luke Farritor, and Julian Schilliger. Fifteen columns of Greek text (10 of which are shown here) are revealed, and are shown on top of the papyrus sheet they are written on. This is the output of a noninvasive software process using X-ray images to peer inside the rolled scroll. © Vesuvius Challenge

When a window frames a view just so…
From Get Inspired subscriber Rob Atkins:
“I was standing at the corner of West 52nd Street in Manhattan, when a delivery van stopped at the light and framed some advertising in front of me. I managed to get a quick shot with my Nikon before the light turned and the van pulled away.”
Have a window-framed scene “hanging” on your wall? Did you snap one somewhere else? Send us the photo! Include your name, camera used, location, and anything else you’d like to share. stories@getty.edu
