Huawei has announced that it is ready to release the next major upgrade for its HarmonyOS 2.0 software. The cross-device platform had come into being as a obligatory replacement for official Android on the OEM’s mobile devices, although it is now present on other ecosystem products from smartwatches to smart door locks.
HarmonyOS 3.0 is already touted as more streamlined and bloat-free than its predecessor, bringing some technical enhancements such as improvements to its JS/eTS language that leads to reduced app-opening latency despite increased theoretical complexity.
The ArkUI declarative framework and Ark compiler are also backed as better in the first HarmonyOS 3.0 Developer Preview (DP1). However, only those who own a limited pool of devices will be able to make sure of these claims.
The Mate 40 series of high-end phablets are on this list, as are the P50, P50 Pro and P50 Pocket – a good sign that, while they may not be the most cost-effective flagships around, they will stay up-to-date in terms of software at least.
HarmonyOS 3.0 DP1 is also available for just 1 of Huawei’s tablets at present: the 12.6-inch MatePad Pro, although this does include its SKUs with both Wi-Fi only (WGR-W09 and WGR-W19) and 4G/LTE (WGR-AN09) connectivity.
