Alongside Oppo, do you know that Huawei has also signed an agreement for sharing key technology patents with Samsung? Yes, Huawei partnered with 20 companies around the globe, this includes smartphone makers, smart cars, network equipment makers, and others.
Talking specifically, Samsung is the biggest licensee among the foreign players that signed an agreement with Huawei for cross-license patent sharing. Under this agreement, Samsung could use Huawei’s patent for its own devices.
Probably, Samsung could pay Huawei per device. However, there are no further details are available on the specifics of the contract between these two tech giants.
Oppo:
Earlier this day, Huawei officially confirmed a cross-licensing global technology patent with Chinese phone maker, Oppo. This partnership will allow Oppo to access Huawei’s wireless network, WiFi, audio and video encoders, and 5G patents.
Cross-Licensing:
In patent law, a cross-licensing agreement is an agreement according to which two or more parties grant a license to each other for the exploitation of the subject matter claimed in one or more of the patents each owns.
Patent:
Huawei has been one of the biggest patent holders of 5G technologies in the world and continues ramping up investment for research and development on new network technologies.
Huawei patents are widely recognized, especially in mainstream standards such as cellular, Wi-Fi, and audio/video codecs.
In June this year, Huawei announced its annual patent applications in the U.S. totals around 4000, with an average of 3000 new ones granted. In 2021, Huawei ranked fifth in terms of new patents granted, adding up to a total of 20000 patents in the United States.
During the same timeline, the number of Huawei’s patent applications in China has been on the rise for seven years, exceeding 10,000 in 2020 and hitting nearly 12,000 in 2021.
Huawei’s licensees cover many areas, including smartphones, connected cars, networking, IoT, and smart homes. In the past five years, more than 2 billion smartphones have obtained Huawei’s 4G/5G patent licenses. And for cars, about 8 million connected vehicles are licensed with Huawei patents each year.

Today, Huawei and Oppo announced signing a major agreement of cross-licensing global technology patent. This agreement includes sharing of patents such as smartphone networks and 5G.
Cross-licensing:
A cross-licensing agreement is a contract between two or more parties where each party grants rights to their intellectual property to the other parties.
This could be a major move for Huawei and Oppo, as they enrich the cooperation by supporting the innovation of technology using patents and investing more to improve them. Currently, there’s not much information revealed about the agreement.
However, we remain optimistic about the changes it could bring to the smartphone and tech industry.
“After more than 20 years of continuous innovation, Huawei has developed multiple high-value patent portfolios in the global marketplace in domains like 5G, Wi-Fi, and audio/video codecs,” said Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department. “We are delighted to have reached a cross-licensing agreement with OPPO. The mutual recognition of intellectual property value between companies is a major step towards fostering a positive cycle of innovation and research in high-value standards: investing, receiving returns from investment, and then reinvesting. This will enable our industry to keep innovating and provide consumers with more competitive products and services.”
“We are very pleased to enter into a patent cross-licensing agreement with Huawei. It clearly demonstrates that the two companies recognize and greatly respect the value of each other’s intellectual property. It is a win-win deal for both sides,” stated Adler Feng, OPPO’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer. “We will, as always, advocate for the establishment of a sustainable, healthy intellectual property ecosystem, where intellectual property licenses can be resolved through amicable negotiations and every company’s patent value are highly respected.”
