As you all know, Huawei developed its own operating system some time ago, in a push to create more of its software (and hardware) in-house, rather than rely on other companies. While the company’s operating system, called HarmonyOS is still based on Android, it’s slowly building up a character and life of its own.
The second generation of HarmonyOS was launched during Huawei’s Developer Conference in September 2020 and rumors have now begun to float around online that its successor is on its way.
Unlike last year, Huawei did not host the Developer Conference in September, but will be having it on the 24th of October instead, and that is when the new HarmonyOS is expected.
According to Huawei, the number of users who have upgraded to HarmonyOS exceeds 100 million, which is a huge milestone for the company, to say the least. The operating system’s second generation will become available to even more models in the future, older Huawei smartphones and tablets included.
Needless to say, Huawei is very optimistic now and does not rule out the possibility that the HarmonyOS might exceed 300 million users by the end of the year.
Before that however, Huawei will most likely be releasing HarmonyOS 3.0 during its 2021 Developer Conference, which will be held at the Dongguan Basketball Center. There are rumors that the company might even choose to release this third reiteration of its operating system to non-Chinese users for the very first time.
In addition to that, the company is also working with other industry giants that focus on home appliances and other electronics, in order to launch HarmonyOS-powered smart IoT products.
And if you thought that’s where Huawei will stop, you were wrong: it also plans to add the Harmony operating system on board of smart car systems.
At this rate, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to soon see Harmony make an appearance on every other piece of electronic equipment from PCs and Laptops to VR glasses and more. Most likely, this will slowly begin to take place following HarmonyOS 3.0’s launch.
The operating system has grown exponentially since its initial release: the Chinese company officially released HarmonyOS on June 2nd. In the first week, by June 9, it already had over 10 million active users. In two weeks, it saw 18 million users, after a month, 25 million and by the end of July, 40 million.
Considering these numbers and the speed at which they grew, HarmonyOS is a huge force to contend with, if Huawei continues at this pace. If the HarmonyOS 3.0 arrives with even more improvements over its predecessor and becomes available outside China, it might just become a serious rival to other popular operating systems out there.
