An IDF soldier from the 202nd Paratrooper Battalion was fatally shot overnight on Monday during a training session in Israel’s south.
The incident occurred when the soldier, who was marking the firing line as part of an exercise, was allegedly shot by a fellow soldier from his platoon at a distance of approximately 250 meters. The victim was wearing identification marks at the time.
The IDF announced that the circumstances of the incident are currently under investigation.
The deceased soldier was later identified as Sergeant Or Israelov, a 19-year-old from the city of Bat Yam.
Last month, a soldier in the Israeli military’s elite Egoz unit was accused of causing the deaths of two company commanders in the unit due to negligence. According to the indictment, the officer shot the two commanders, Maj. Ofek Aharon and Maj. Itamar Elharar, in January 2022 due to misidentification.
In January, one Israeli soldier was killed and three others wounded in a grenade explosion on a West Bank military base Saturday, weeks after the military released data which counted six deaths from training accidents last year alone.
