Outstanding contributions of individuals and teams to international education across eight categories in the IEAA Excellence Awards were recognised at the Australian International Education Conference.
Navitas’s Jon Chew was awarded the excellence in professional commentary, with Helen Zimmerman recognised in the life membership category
The 2022 winners were revealed during the AIEC Opening Plenary on the Gold Coast on October 19.
The categories included innovation, best practice, rising star, leadership, professional commentary and more.
The distinguished contribution to international education award was given to Chris Ziguras of RMIT University’s school of global, urban and social studies, for his leading authority on the social, economic and political dimensions of the internationalisation of education.

Derek Scott, principal of Haileybury, was recognised for excellence in leadership in international education. He is on the federal government’s International Education Council, the Victorian government’s International Education Expert Advisory Group and is the chair of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria and the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority.
Jon Chew, global head of insights and analytics of Navitas, was awarded the excellence in professional commentary related to international education category, with Helen Zimmerman, chair of tuition protection services board in the department of education, recognised in the life membership category.
Chew is one of Australia’s foremost experts on international education market trends, contributing significantly to public debate.
Zimmerman has held numerous leadership positions in the sector, culminating in several senior executive roles at Navitas. In addition to being a longstanding board member and vice president, Helen was also the first female president of the IEAA.
IEAA recognised its ‘study Australia international education’ program that engages international students with Australian employers with the innovation in international education award.
Other winners included Eloise Dolan, program manager and Generation Asia lead of Asia Society Australia in the Tony Adams rising star award category, with Iori Forsyth as the highly commended.
Outstanding postgraduate thesis award was given to Anna Kent, sessional academic and researcher of Deakin University, for her thesis on Australian scholarships for Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific.
The high commendation award was given to Kazuhiro Kudo, while a academic and professional staff resource kit by Monika Kansal, Ritesh Chugh, Stephanie Macht, Anthony Weber, Mahsood Shah and Robert Grose won the best practice in international education award.
“At such a critical time in international education, the achievements of these awardees are a testament to the value that international education brings to Australia,” said Simon Ridings, vice president of IEAA.
“They are representative of the continuing dedication and inventiveness of so many of their peers,” he added.
“Every year, IEAA members nominate candidates for the Excellence Awards, which are then selected by IEAA’s Excellence Awards Committee and the IEAA Board,” said Andrew Tijs, communications and professional learning manager at IEAA.
“The winner’s achievements vary – from a career of distinguished service to specific projects that have helped further the goals of Australia’s community of international educators and students,” he noted.
