Hon Alannah MacTiernan MLC
Minister for Regional Development; Agriculture and Food; Hydrogen Industry
Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan has announced the selection of an independent geotechnical consultant to deliver a major technical investigation into the Mira Mar landslip in Albany.
After the landslip last year, the State Government funded an interim geotechnical assessment of the Mira Mar landslip zone.
CMW Geosciences (CMW) prepared various pieces of technical advice between November 2021 to October 2022 and together with the City of Albany have overseen temporary remediation efforts to protect existing properties at threat from further damage.
Following some preliminary studies and advice, two heavily damaged properties on Sleeman Avenue were demolished earlier this year.
CMW have now been awarded a more extensive contract to deliver a detailed technical investigation of the landslip and provide further geotechnical expertise and advice on any further temporary remediation works, which will be undertaken based on recommendations provided.
The Great Southern Development Commission will continue to work with affected stakeholders of the Mira Mar landslip zone.
Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"We understand that this landslip has been a very challenging issue for landowners and the City of Albany.
"We have taken an active role to help everyone navigate a pathway through the uncertainty.
"The solution will take some time but in the interim, we are doing all we can to protect the safety of people and their homes.
"While the investigation is ongoing, some further State Government funding has been made accessible to support ongoing temporary remediation efforts that may be recommended.
"CMW will commence work as soon as site conditions are suitable – hopefully within the month."
Comments attributed to Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens:
"This has been a very difficult time for the residents of Mira Mar landslip zone.
"I am confident this major geotechnical investigation commissioned today will bring us closer towards finding a safe solution for those impacted. I will continue to work closely with the community on this issue."
