TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian government responded to Ukraine‘s request for expelling Russia from G20 in Bali. “As the G20 presidency, Indonesia puts forward inclusiveness as one of its principles,” said the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah via text message to Tempo, Tuesday, November 1, 2022.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry suggested that Russia be expelled from the G20. Ukraine has also called for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invitation to the summit this month to be withdrawn.
“Putin publicly acknowledged ordering missile strikes on Ukrainian civilians and energy infrastructure,” said Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko on Twitter, Tuesday, November 1, 2022.
“With his hands stained in blood, he must not be allowed to sit at the table with world leader. Putin’s invitation to Bali summit must be revoked, and Russia expelled from G20,” he added.
Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi stated that expelling a member of G20 is not the authority of the presidency. She underlined that a joint decision must be made by consensus.
“Throughout the history of the G20, everything is taken by consensus. If we convey it, if that’s what everyone wants, the presidency will run it. The question is, is that what everyone wants?” said Retno during an interview with Tempo on October 21, 2022.
The face-to-face G20 summit will take place in Bali, on November 15-16, 2022. The summit under the Indonesian presidency will focus on the post-pandemic global economic recovery, with priorities in the fields of health, digital transformation, and energy transition.
However, the international forum is overshadowed by the global crisis in the food and energy sector triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war. In a number of ministerial meetings, several Western countries led by the United States strongly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its impact on the food and energy crisis.
