- Iranians turned out to mourn Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh a day after he was assassinated in Iran’s capital, in an attack that has heightened fears of a direct conflict between Tehran and its arch-enemy Israel. Iran and its proxies will meet to discuss retaliation, sources say.
- The head of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammed Deif, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza last month, the Israeli military confirmed. He is believed to have been one of the masterminds of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel.

- Indian soldiers are rushing to complete construction of a bridge to connect the worst affected area in the Kerala landslides as the search for survivors and bodies entered a third day. The disaster has killed at least 178 people after a “night of horrors.”

- The Bank of England cut interest rates from a 16-year high after a narrow vote in favor from policymakers divided over whether inflation pressures had eased sufficiently.

- A slump in China’s manufacturing activity led a generally weak performance for Asia’s factories last month as business owners grappled with tepid demand, private surveys showed, raising risks of an underpowered economic recovery in the region.
- Tourists are flocking to Japan to scoop up high-end clothes and handbags at a discount thanks to the weak yen currency. Luxury goods companies like Louis Vuitton parent LVMH would rather they stayed home and shopped.
- Boeing named aerospace industry veteran Kelly Ortberg as its CEO to turn around the company beset by legal and regulatory problems after a quarter in which it lost more than $1 billion. Ortberg has a background that threads a delicate needle for the planemaker.
