The FBI is trying to track down the first victim of serial killer Israel Keyes, suspected in multiple murders across the country between 2001 and last March.
Keyes, who apparently committed suicide in a jail in Anchorage on Sunday, told investigators that he raped his first victim between 1996 and 1998 alongside the Deschutes River near Maupin. He told investigators that he was able to lure the girl, who was 14 to 18 years old, away from her friends and attack her. He did not kill her, he said.
The FBI has been unable to locate any corresponding police reports. If true, the victim would now be in her late 20s or early 30s.
"None of this has been corroborated," said Beth Anne Steele, spokeswoman for the FBI in Portland.
She said the agency is trying to locate the victim and determine when Keyes was in Oregon, where he went, if there are any other victims and whether he committed any other crimes in the state.
Keyes, a 34-yerar-old construction worker in Anchorage, was arrested in March in the rape and murder of Samantha Koenig, an 18-year-old barista. While in custody, Keyes told investigators he killed as many as seven other people dating to 2001.
He told investigators he went to great lengths to plan the murders, flying to airports, renting cars and driving hundreds of miles to his final destination. He said he robbed banks and buried caches with weapons and other items to dispose of the bodies.
Investigators believe that Keyes did not know any of the people he murdered, including Bill Currier, 49, and Lorraine Currier, 55, in Vermont in 2011, four people in Washington state and another on the East Coast.
Anyone with information about this case should call the FBI in Portland at 503-224-4181, in Bend at 541-389-1202.
