An ITE College East student was among four youths awarded a $10,000 music scholarship by Mapletree and the TENG Company on Wednesday (Apr 6).
Bernice Ng Jing Xuan, 19, was selected for the 2022 intake of the Mapletree-TENG Academic Scholarship for her skills and talent in playing the Guzheng.
The Mapletree-Teng Academic Scholarship has been running since 2018 and is awarded to youths aged 21 and below who are passionate and skilled in Chinese music. It serves as financial support for these youths’ musical education in the instruments they are skilled in.
Participants were required to submit a video recording of them performing with their chosen Chinese instruments for their audition on Mar 19.
The other three awardees this year were Dizi player Ee Anzhi, 11, from Poi Ching School; Suona player Preston Ang, 14, from Raffles Institution; and Erhu player Tan Ya Hui Eugenia, 21 from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
All four awardees will be presented with one-to-one training classes, mentorships, and performance opportunities by The TENG Academy. They will also be given the opportunity to give back to the community by applying their talents and skills to community outreach programmes.
Mr Yang Ji Wei, TENG’s Co-founder and Executive Director said: “The scholarship is in its fifth year and we are heartened to see that the passion for Chinese music still persists in younger generations year after year.”
