Stamp Duty Costing Some Australian Buyers Six Times as Much as It Did in the 1980s
How the times have changed: Joint research by PropTrack and the e-61 Institute has found that stamp duty taxes are costing Australian home buyers of median-priced properties at least four times as much as they did in the early 1980s, with one region getting dinged by quite a bit more. Currently, buyers of median-priced homes in Australia’s largest property markets, Sydney and Melbourne, are paying six months of the average full time salary in stamp duty. For Melbourne buyers, that is a 6.1-fold increase over what they were paying in the 1980s. Industry analysts say the soaring stamp duty costs are the result of rising home prices and falling housing affordability and underscore the need for property tax reform. realestate.com.au

Hong Kong home prices fell for eight straight months through December, and have spiraled 23% since August 2021. South China Morning Post
