In her latest video, the expert – whose TikTok handle is @drivenbybeauty – rates the new offerings from Kmart, which includes a huge array of serums, moisturisers and cleansers for just $6 each.
“Guess who brought out a new skincare line? Kmart!” she said.
“My name’s Jayde and I’m a dermal clinician and I love going through ingredients and breaking down skincare. So let’s see if it’s worth it.”
Niacinamide Serum
The skin expert said she had one major issue with Kmart’s Niacinamide Serum.
“Niacinamide also known as vitamin B3,” she said in the video. “They’ve put three per cent in there and I see a massive problem with this.
“Based on clinical, medical journal data, niacinamide is most effective at four per cent and you’ll see in a lot of cosmetics it goes up to 10 per cent. So between four and 10 per cent.
“So what’s three per cent going to do? Babes, Kmart, what’s it going to do?”
She does say that the serum would be “nice and hydrating” and that it “would be good for a teenager” or a “tween starting out” with skincare.
Salicylic Acid
“Let’s have a little look at their Two per cent Salicylic Acid Serum, shall we?” the expert said.
“What I’m starting to see is a common theme with their ingredients … What I will say is that two per cent saly acid is well studied, so I think this serum is where it’s at.”
She added that the product was good for congestion.
Retinol 1%
“Can I be honest with you?” she said in the video. “If there is one product you need to invest in, it is a retinol.
“I have been doing my role for a very long time, and when I take someone off a very cheap retinol and get them onto a better retinol or even a prescription retinol, you see the changes.
“I don’t want to see any teenagers using that retinol and then coming into the clinic because I have to fix you. It’s not happening.”
Range of cleansers
The expert noted that all the cleaners in the range were cream cleaners, meaning they were better suited to people with dry skin.
She also noted that “none of them are suitable to be used anywhere near the eyes”.
Recommendations
For tweens with oily skin, the skin expert suggested using the Niacinamide Cream Cleanser morning and night; the Nicacinamide Serum morning and night; the Salicylic Acid at night on breakouts and spots; the Daily Moisturiser Hyaluronic Acid as your “first moisturiser” morning and night.
She then suggests following it up with a chemist moisturiser such as Ego QV Ceramides Lotion.
She warns tweens against using the Retinol Serum.
