A Korean student’s stay in Bali has gone from holiday fun to hassling with police after the young woman was caught shoplifting at Kuta’s Beachwalk mall.
The student, identified by police as JL, 26, was apprehended after two shops at Beachwalk filed police reports, Kuta Police Chief Wayan Sumara told reporters on Monday.
Officers have opened an investigation, interviewing witnesses and checking CCTV footage.
“The perpetrator was secured at her accommodation at Komala Indah, Kuta, Badung after we identified the female student,” Sumara said, as quoted by Merdeka.
JL allegedly hit the store Zara on Oct. 1 around 4pm. She took a several shirts and trousers, totaling IDR6,018,700 (US$445).
“The perpetrator tore off the security alarm tags attached to the clothes and put them in her bag,” Sumara said.
Apparently because the first action was so successful, the suspect repeated the offense on Oct. 4 at a different store in the same mall.
“The second time, the perpetrator took some clothing, air freshener and body care items so the company suffered a lost of IDR3,588,800 (US$265). It was the same mode, the perpetrator tore the alarm tag off.”
The success of the two instances of theft was only short-lived as CCTV footage made it easy to trace the perpetrator back.
But there’s more: police suspect the Korean student hit even more shops while in Bali.
“We are still deepening the investigation because there are allegedly other crime scenes that the perpetrator hit in Bali,” Sumara said.
Every now and then, a foreigner makes headlines in Bali for petty crime. An American man was sentenced to 20 months in prison in July 2017 after being found guilty of robbing a string of convenience stores.
