In 2021, Las Vegas had some big openings such as luxury property Resorts World Las Vegas and the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, the latter a new resort property built at the former site of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Last year also saw significant acquisitions on the Strip and beyond, including the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians’ purchase of The Palms. The results of those deals, plus more construction and big-name entertainment residencies are what’s ahead for 2022.
Acquisitions to watch
San Manuel Tribe purchases The Palms
In the first half of 2021, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians announced plans to purchase The Palms in Las Vegas for $650 million. The Palms, which doesn’t sit on the Las Vegas Strip, is temporarily closed, but in mid-December, the San Manuel Gaming and Hospitality Authority announced in a press release that it plans to open the Vegas property in the spring.
The Palms complex includes a casino, a hotel with more than 700 rooms, the Palms Place condominiums, convention space, multiple dining options, a 2,500-seat theater, pool and spa.
The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians also operates Yaamava’ Resort & Casino in Highland, California. The property was previously known as San Manuel Casino before changing its name to Yaamava’ Resort & Casino in September. The casino began its expansion into a luxury resort in 2018 and unveiled its new hotel tower in December.
MGM Resorts acquires The Cosmopolitan
In September 2021, MGM Resorts International purchased The Cosmopolitan from the investment company Blackstone as part of a $5.65 billion deal. The deal is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2022, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The Cosmopolitan recently renovated 3,000 rooms.
If approved, the Cosmopolitan would be added to MGM’s properties on Las Vegas Boulevard, which currently include the Bellagio, Aria Resort & Casino, Park MGM, New York-New York, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay and the non-gaming Vdara.
Hard Rock buys The Mirage
Hard Rock International purchased The Mirage from MGM Resorts International for $1.075 billion in December. Hard Rock International also purchased the licensing and naming rights for Hard Rock Hotel in May 2020, allowing the Hard Rock Hotel brand to have a presence in Las Vegas.
Hard Rock plans to build a giant purple guitar-shaped hotel and will remodel other parts of The Mirage in the process, according to a press release from the company.
Big entertainment booked
While Las Vegas is known for its gambling appeal, its entertainment options also draw people from around the world. Here are some new and notable residences coming to Sin City in 2022.
Katy Perry: The pop star’s “Play” residency started in late December and will run through March 19 at Resorts World Theatre.
Adele: You can count on seeing some of the pop and soul star’s newest songs off her new album “30” at “Weekends with Adele” at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Her residency opens Jan. 21 and runs through April 15.
Luke Bryan: The country star and “American Idol” judge brings his residency, “Luke Bryan: Vegas,” to the Resorts World Theatre Feb. 11-May 2.
Carrie Underwood: The former “American Idol” winner opened her show, “Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency,” in December, but it is currently dark. It will resume March 23-April 2 at Resorts World Theatre.
John Legend: The R&B soul singer will bring his “Love in Las Vegas” show to the Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino April 22-Oct. 29.
Construction projects
Caesars Palace: The renovation of the resort’s entrance is wrapping up. The new entrance will include two redesigned gaming areas and a new lobby bar, according to a press release from the hotel.
Fontainebleau: The plans for this property have changed multiple times since construction began in 2007, ultimately delaying the opening of the 67-story hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip. In March 2020, construction stopped due to the pandemic.
In November 2021, the original developer, Fontainebleau Development, returned to the project and said the hotel would be finished by the end of 2023, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Majestic Las Vegas: The non-gaming and non-smoking hotel across from the Las Vegas Convention Center will begin construction this month, according to its website. The 720-room hotel will have a total of 10 floors. Construction is expected to be complete in 2024.
Miracle Mile Shops: Planet Hollywood is remodeling its Miracle Mile shops. The interior and exterior renovation will begin in winter 2022 and is expected to be completed in spring 2023, according to a press release.
The interior renovations will include flooring, lighting, ceilings, seating and a new sound system. The popular rainstorm feature will also be upgraded.
The Miracle Mile Shops will stay open through construction from Sunday to Thursday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday to Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
MSG Sphere: Construction for the MSG Sphere venue continues. The project is expected to be finished by 2023, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. When the 17,500-seat venue is finished, it will be east of The Venetian and Palazzo and measure 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide at its widest point.
The venue will include 580,000 square feet of programmable LED lighting and will eventually have screens the size of three football fields.
Project63: Construction at the 228,278-square-foot four-story retail complex at the CityCenter complex is underway. The fourth floor with an outside terrace will be used for outdoor dining and drinking areas.
The project is expected to be completed in the fall.
