With a view to confirming its status as the largest central and eastern European budget airline, Hungary-based low-cost carrier (LCC) Wizz Air is planning to launch new direct services from Budapest to the Belarus capital of Minsk in the spring of 2020.
The proposed new service was revealed to BELTA, Belarusia’s state-owned newswire, by Artem Sikorsky, the director of the aviation department at the country’s transport and communications ministry. “The Hungarian Aviation Authority has sent a draft Memorandum of Understanding to the [Belarusian] aviation department in order to designate Hungary’s carrier Wizz Air for flights from Budapest to Minsk in the IATA 2020 summer season. Currently, its approval and signing is in progress,” the director added.
Just a week ago LCC Wizz Air announced further expansion at its Chișinău, Moldova base, by allocating a third aircraft and launching four new December 2019 routes from the country’s capital city.
Wizz’s fast-growing operation in the former Soviet Union also includes recent announcements of a first route to the Russian regions, from Budapest to Kazan, and the gaining of permission for Wizz Air UK, its Britain-based subsidiary, to operate London-Moscow and London-St Petersburg routes from this coming IATA winter season.
