Life is full of ironies. The Chico E-R ran a long editorial on Sunday, 12/4, (“Constitution Reading on the House floor?”) endorsing House Republican Kevin McCarthy’s gratuitous, grandstanding pledge to read the entirety of the US Constitution at the first session of the 118th Congress, which he hopes to lead. The irony? On Saturday, 12/3, Donald Trump, in a social media post, called for a “termination” of all election rules, “including those found in the Constitution” to combat “the Massive Fraud” in the 2020 election. The election fraud claim is widely known as the Big Lie as it has no basis in fact.
Given McCarthy’s conversion to Trump toadyism (despite the threat he and other Members of Congress faced on the January 6 assault on the Capitol by Trump supporters) his love for the US Constitution would be better served by reading it to The Boss, rather than showboating for Members of Congress and the public.
