To Ozaukee Press:
I would like to respond to a few items discussed in the letter to the editor from a Port Washington reader published recently in Ozaukee Press with the heading, “The left twists facts to make them fit the liberal narrative.”
The letter writer described the FBI investigation at Mar-a-Lago as a “raid.” This word is often used to describe what happened at the resort, but it is misleading. It seems to imply something nefarious or illegal. That is certainly not an accurate representation of what it was. The FBI had a legal search warrant signed by a judge and during the search the investigators found documents that should not have been there and do not belong to Mr. Trump.
The writer stated Trump has a “constitutional right” to the documents. This is not true. Presidential records are governed by the Presidential Records Act (PRA) passed by Congress in 1978, which took effect in January 1981. The act states that “the official records of the President and his staff are owned by the United States, not by the president.” We, the American people, own the records, not the president.
I have conducted research at several presidential libraries and am pleased the National Archives manages the libraries and the presidential records for our benefit. The records from Trump’s years as president will end up in the Trump presidential library when that is completed.
Finally, the letter stated that the left refuses to accept that tens of millions believe there were major irregularities in the 2020 election. However, just because a large number of people believe something is not evidence the belief is accurate.
One could look further and understand that the many court cases filed by Trump and his supporters found no evidence of any irregularities that could have changed the outcome of the election.
One could also look at the report titled “Lost, Not Stolen: The Conservative Case that Trump Lost and Biden Won the 2020 Presidential Election.” That was written by Republicans—two former GOP senators, three former federal judges and a GOP election lawyer.
