About 100 businesses and stakeholders from Liverpool will come together today for a Government-hosted roadshow – 'Made in Liverpool, Sold to the World' – to celebrate the export achievements and potential of the Liverpool City Region.
The event, hosted by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Insider Media on Monday (27 March) brings together local government and regional organisations, the DBT’s Export Champions, and other businesses who are successfully exporting or have export potential.
Business and trade minister Kevin Hollinrake will provide the closing speech where he will highlight Liverpool’s opportunity-embracing spirit and strong exporting pedigree thanks to its geographical advantage of having the largest Atlantic facing seaport in the UK.
Business and trade minister Kevin Hollinrake said: “Liverpool has already given the country one of our greatest ever exports in The Beatles, and has a long and proud history as one of our nation’s finest trading ports. Now we want to help create the next global success story.
“This event will celebrate fantastic businesses with great exporting stories, offering inspiration to others looking to get onto the exporting ladder.
“Exporters create jobs, pay higher wages and help grow our economy, which is why we want the UK to be an export-led economy and reach a trillion pounds of exports a year by 2030.”
City mayor Joanne Anderson will also speak at the event, highlighting the city's strengths in exporting and pride in businesses and sectors.
Liverpool City Region currently exports £8.8bn and aims to achieve exports of £11.8bn by 2030, in support of the Government's race to a trillion target. Its largest trading partners are the US, China, Germany and Ireland.
The region is known for its exports in automotive and chemicals, as well as its world-class capability in the health and life sciences sector, with world leading vaccine manufacturers, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Pandemic Institute all based there. The region also benefits from a thriving gaming and creative sector, which will also be represented at the Made in Liverpool event.
While in the city, minister Hollinrake will also visit Liverpool-based Export Champion Briggs Automotive Company (BAC). The business manufactures the Mono, the world's first road-legal, single-seat supercar which was showcased at the F1 Saudi GP as part of a promotion to export into the market.
Mono has been sold to more than 46 countries worldwide across five continents, with the business having dealership agreements spanning across Hong Kong, Indonesia, Germany, Singapore and Malaysia. BAC exports 90 per cent of the cars they produce, whilst their Mono cars are comprised of 95 per cent UK-supplied parts.
Neill Briggs, BAC co-founder, said: “Liverpool has an exceptionally rich heritage in automotive and manufacturing excellence, delivering over the years standout innovative designs, breakthrough engineering solutions and state-of-the-art technologies. As someone that grew up not too far away from the centre of Liverpool, for BAC to be part of the city’s deep automotive legacy is a personal dream come true.
“At BAC, innovation never stops – it’s why our Mono cars are truly unique and why the company continues to develop incredible world-first technologies. I am so proud when I look at the talented teams that make up the BAC family today, especially our young, local talent that have been nurtured from nearby universities and colleges.
“We're really proud to be an Export Champion, flying the flag for the advanced manufacturing processes and innovations taking place within the Liverpool City region; the fact that we export our car to 46 territories across the globe is testament to this.”
