Winter Speaker Event – A Young Ancient Nation: A Primer on Ukrainian History and Culture
Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at 7:00 p.m.
West Park Recreation Center, 615 W Park Ave, Oakhurst, NJ 07755
Over the past year, it seems that suddenly everybody has learned what the Ukrainian flag looks like, and some might even recognize the Ukrainian coat of arms or national anthem. Despite this, it remains for many distant and obscure. Michael’s talk will try to demystify Ukraine’s complex past and its diverse regional cultures. The talk will give a very basic introduction to these topics, including art, music, food, and dance, as well as some weightier questions of language and history. Ukrainians have had a fraught relationship with Russia for centuries, and Michael will explore how differing views of that history are having a major impact on today’s events.
Michael Andrec has been the archivist at the Ukrainian History and Education Center in Somerset since 2010. Born in the United States but having learned Ukrainian as a first language, he is well-positioned to preserve, describe, and provide researcher access to the primarily non-English collections at the UHEC archives. He also coordinates much of the UHEC’s humanities-related content and programming, mainly in the areas of history and genealogy.
