In our issue on December 2, 2021, Eamon Lacey reported on the retirement of popular Garda Aine Donnelly was retiring after a distinguished service of over four decades in the force.
The report told how in 1981 Aine Donnelly made history in Clonmel and had the distinction at the time of making the front pages with none other than Charlie Haughey. Aine was pictured on The Nationalist the week she started with a heading “First Ban Garda” in Clonmel beside the lead story of Charlie Haughey on his “Rise and Follow Charlie” general election tour of Tipperary.
Over 40 years on and Aine, who served a total of twelve superintendents at Clonmel Garda Station, retired on Friday, November 25. In June 1981 Aine had no female companion in Clonmel station when she arrived straight out of her training in Templemore.

In early December last a Clonmel councillor described an RTÉ Investigates report into a company he established to host training weekends for local politicians as “a blatant attempt to discredit me”.
A report on RTÉ’s website claimed that the company, which traded as the Institute of Professional Training (IPT) had been removed by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), the State agency that regulates training providers, from its register of accredited training providers as far back as November 2014.
However, Cllr Dennehy, a former Mayor of Clonmel, denied the claims by RTÉ that he wrongly claimed QQI State accreditation.

Survivors and relatives of the three men murdered in the Miami Showband massacre were to receive nearly £1.5m (€1.75m) in total damages to settle claims over suspected collusion with the loyalist terrorist murderers we reported in mid December last year.
Stephen Travers from Carrick-on-Suir was among those injured in the atrocity and he delivered a powerful victim impact statement in court.
One of Ireland’s most popular acts, the Miami Showband was targeted as they travelled home to Dublin following a gig in July, 1975, murdering lead singer Fran O’Toole, guitarist Tony Geraghty and trumpeter Brian McCoy.

Sunday, December 12, 2021 was a poignant occasion for the people of Goatenbridge who gathered to unveil a monument to former councillor and community activist, Martin Lonergan, who passed away the previous July.
A beautiful stone memorial seat had been located in the village beside the river that was blessed by Fr Bobby after Mass was celebrated for Martin.
