A total of 4.4 million passengers passed through Luxembourg Airport in 2019, marking a new record for the transport hub that has seen its visitor numbers climb steadily since 2009.
The 2019 passenger numbers represented an increase of 9% compared to 2018, according the latest figures from the airport which is based just outside of Luxembourg City in Findel.
July – the start of the school summer holidays – saw the greatest number of passengers fly in and out of the airport at 430,000.
The airport said in a statement that the increase in passenger figures was due to the launch of new routes from Luxembourg. The airport added destinations including Budapest, Edinburgh, Marseille and Toulouse last year.
Luxembourgish airline Luxair has already announced new routes for this year including Brindisi and Florence in Italy and Montpellier and Nantes in France.
Budget airline Volotea has said it would launch flights to Venice, where it will enter into competition with Luxair, and Alicante in Spain.
Luxembourg airport connects travellers to 89 airports in Europe and the Middle East.
Following a dip in passengers in the wake of the financial crisis, the airport has since seen steady growth, almost tripling the number of customers over the past decade, up from 1.5 million in 2009 to 4.4 million in 2019.
