The grand duchy’s short-staffed military aims to spend more on recruitment adverts this year.
The Luxembourg Army has significantly increased its marketing budget this year, as it steps up recruitment efforts.
The army plans to spend €782,500 on advertising in 2022, 110% more than in 2021 and 69% more than it did in 2019, according to government figures.
In 2021, the most recent year for which a detailed breakout was available, the largest line items in the army’s media budget were for information stands (€53,303 or 14% of the annual total), “gadgets” (€37,984, 10%) and social media (€33,187, 9%).
The military spent €205,790 (55% of the annual total budget) on advertising agencies, which placed adverts on behalf of the army.
The figures were provided by François Bausch, the defence minister (Green party), in response to a parliamentary question by the Pirate party MP Marc Goergen.
The army has struggled to recruit and retain soldiers for several years.
