In Luxembourg, French cross-border commuters earn lower salaries than those from other neighbouring countries.
According to the latest Statec study on the remuneration of cross-border workers, the French are still at the bottom of the list, as the National Institute of Statistics reported annual income differences exceeding €11,000 in 2020.
French cross-border workers earn on average €47,000 per year, compared to their Belgian or German counterparts, who earn €58,100 and €58,600 respectively.
Statec explains the gap is due to “specialisation” of cross-border employees in certain sectors of the economy. French employees tend to be over-represented in lower-paid activities, such as the Horesca sector, or trade, according to the report. French cross-border workers also tend to be younger, which could explain the wage disparity.
Despite their lower pay, French employees make up the majority of cross-border workers in Luxembourg, numbering 108,000, or 52%, back in 2020. Employees commuting from Germany or Belgium make up 24%, or 49,000 workers, respectively.
In 2020, only German cross-border workers observed a pay increase compared to 2019:
- – €396 per year for Belgians
- + €1,832 for Germans
- – €1,091 for the French.
