Two goals from that man Gerson Rodrigues were the difference as Luxembourg beat Azerbaijan 3-1 to tighten their grip on third spot in Group A.
It was Rodrigues who stunned the Aviva back in March with his late thunderbolt to inflict a damaging defeat on Stephen Kenny’s Republic of Ireland.
Kenny’s side head to Luxembourg on Sunday, but will need at least a point from tonight’s match against Portugal if they are now to have a shot at finishing third in the group.
Despite Tellur Mutallimov being sent off in Bku after just 21 minutes, Rodrigues did not open the scoring until the 67th minute before Sebastien Thill swiftyl doubled the lead. Azer Salahli got one back for the hosts but Rodrigues sealed the win in injury-time.
