Timber-Built Tower Opens in Paris
In Paris, a multi-use timber tower known as Le Berlier has just been completed. Located in the city’s 13th arrondissement, the roughly 165-foot-tall development by architecture office Moreau Kusunoki has a facade of charred and pre-weathered wood. In total, the project measures over 7,300 square meters, accommodating 77 residential units, each with a private exterior space, as well as amenities and public spaces including an art gallery and a restaurant. A home in Sydney with a collapsed roof has sold for close to A$1 million (US$637,410). Located in St. Johns Park, a suburb some 20 miles from the center of the city, the three-bedroom fixer-upper changed hands at auction for A$965,000. The large missing section of roof has created an open-air kitchen that’s littered with debris, burnt scaffolding and plaster. Wildfires Costing the U.S. Billions in Lost Property Value
Climate-exacerbated wildfires cost the U.S. between $394 billion to $893 billion annually, primarily in diminished real estate values, according to a new congressional report from the Joint Economic Committee. The figure is more than double what previous government reports have estimated. Real estate in particular is losing anywhere from $67.5 billion to $337.5 billion a year due to wildfires. “The topline numbers are scary,” said Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, who chairs the committee. “Even if you live someplace where wildfire has never been an issue, these are numbers that are big enough to be systemically problematic for the economy.” The Mercury News
