“Call Jane” is set more than 50 years ago but it could hardly be more up-to-the-minute. Made before the end of Roe v. Wade but when its fate was increasingly precarious, “Call Jane” dramatizes the Jane Collective, a Chicago network of women activists who in the years before Roe, clandestinely helped other women obtain safe, illegal abortions. Director Phyllis Nagy, the script writer of Todd Haynes’ radiant ’50s-set 2015 drama “Carol,” again illustrates how the past can illuminate the present, AP Film Writer Jake Coyle writes in his review. Elizabeth Banks plays a housewife drawn into the collective’s mission. It opens in theaters Friday.
Grizzlies wing Ziaire Williams will miss four to six weeks with patellar tendinitis in his right knee. The Memphis Grizzlies updated Williams’ status Wednesday night. Williams had more tests with continuing soreness in his knee. The second-year small forward who was the 10th overall pick in 2021 out of Stanford has yet to play this season for Memphis. Williams started 31 of 62 games played as a rookie. He averaged 8.1 points a game. The Grizzlies said in a statement that testing supports a plan to increase Williams’ workload so that he might return in as soon as four weeks.
Whether it’s offensive tackles Charles Cross or Abraham Lucas, defensive backs Tariq Woolen or Coby Bryant, or running back Ken Walker III, the Seattle Seahawks have received a wealth of production from their rookie draft class. That’s a big reason why Seattle is sitting at 4-3 and currently on top of the NFC West. Cross and Lucas have played every snap at left and right tackle. Woolen is tied for the NFL lead in interceptions with four and Bryant leads the league in forced fumbles with four. And Walker is coming off the best game of his young career with 167 yards and two touchdowns last week vs. the Chargers.
Kyle Schwarber’s power surge has fueled the Philadelphia Phillies in their run to the World Series. He will be the leadoff hitter for Game 1 Friday night in Houston against the Astros. He led the National League with 46 home runs this season and hit three more in the NL Championship Series against San Diego. Phillies manager Rob Thomson lauded Schwarber’s clubhouse contributions and noted how the slugger has seemed to enjoy holding court in front of his locker with younger teammates.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has apologized for publicly criticizing a reporter who asked him why he retains son Brian Ferentz as offensive coordinator with the Hawkeyes’ offense performing so poorly this season. Ferentz had said at his weekly news conference Tuesday that he had experienced an interrogation when a Cleveland.com columnist asked him about his son. That exchange occurred at the news conference following the 54-10 loss at No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday. Ferentz said Tuesday that as bad as the game went, at least he didn’t have the columnist’s job and had to act the way he did.
Thousands of Brazilian fans are arriving in the Ecuadorian port city of Guayaquil for Saturday’s Copa Libertadores final between Flamengo and Athletico. Organizers are concerned that Monumental Stadium might not be at its full capacity of 60,000 for the all-Brazil final due to the high cost to travel to the country. Flamengo arrived first and was welcomed by supporters at the local airport. Hours later, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Athletico arrived. Flamengo won the Copa Libertadores title in 1981 and 2019. Athletico has yet to win South America’s most prestigious club tournament.
A man who livestreamed the aftermath of a mass shooting at a Colorado supermarket has been found not guilty of obstructing police. Jurors reached the verdict in the misdemeanor case of Dean Schiller on Wednesday. Prosecutors said Schiller refused to obey 60 commands to move away from the store in Boulder and dealing with him got in the way of saving lives and securing the scene. But the defense argued that being a temporary distraction doesn’t amount to preventing police from doing their jobs. Schiller heard shots leaving the store where he had been shopping and began livestreaming. He later learned his friend was among the 10 people killed.
An attorney for Harvey Weinstein peppered a woman with questions Wednesday on the lack of forensic evidence that he raped her in 2013. Attorney Alan Jackson asked the woman Wednesday during Weinstein’s Los Angeles trial whether she had any photos, video, or documentation of injuries from the attack. She cried quietly as she answered “no” to each. The model and actor did not go to police until 2017. Weinstein’s attorneys have maintained that he was not even at the woman’s hotel on the night she said she was assaulted. The 70-year-old former movie mogul has pleaded not guilty to 11 sexual assault counts involving five women.

Players such as Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapé, Brighton midfielder Moisés Caicedo and Real Valladolid winger Gonzalo Plata are among them.
Ryan Tannehill walked out wearing sneakers Wednesday to talk to reporters with no hint of a limp. Then the Tennessee Titans quarterback spent the next few minutes sidestepping questions about his sprained right ankle just as he dodges pass rushers trying to take Tannehill down on the field. Yes, Tannehill’s right ankle feels better than after the Titans’ win over Indianapolis when he left the stadium wearing a walking boot. No, he isn’t at a point where he could dance at his daughter’s wedding. Not because of his ankle. She’s 4 and a couple of decades from that moment. Tannehill says he has a little ways to go.
A federal judge in Arizona says he hopes to decide by Friday whether to order members of a group to stop monitoring outdoor ballot drop boxes in the state’s largest county. The effort by the group Clean Elections USA has sparked allegations of voter intimidation. The groups Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans and Voto Latino asked U.S. District Judge Michael Liburdi on Wednesday to prevent members of Clean Elections USA from gathering within sight of drop boxes in Maricopa County and from following voters and taking photos and videos of them and their cars. The attorney for Clean Elections USA said such a broad restraining order would be unconstitutional.

Saints coach Dennis Allen has decided that Andy Dalton will remain the New Orleans Saints starting quarterback for a fifth straight week. Allen says season-opening starter Jameis Winston is healthy enough to return, but that New Orleans offense has been moving the ball effectively and scoring points with Dalton at QB. New Orleans has averaged 31 points per game with Dalton after scoring 17 points per game with Winston. New Orleans has lost five of six games to drop to 2-5. But as the Saints prepare to host the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, they’re only one game out of first place in the NFC South.

Syrian state media say Israeli airstrikes have targeted sites in the vicinity of Damascus, marking the third such strikes in a week. The recent spate of airstrikes comes after a monthlong lull in such attacks. No casualties were reported in the attack early Thursday. A previous strike on Monday wounded a soldier, according to the Syrian military. Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of Syria in recent years, but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations. Israel has acknowledged, however, that it targets bases of Iran-allied militant groups, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
Communities around California’s shrinking Salton Sea are at the center of the latest spat between Arizona and California over how to conserve Colorado River water. The lake is fed by Colorado River water and as it dries up its exposing residents in the area to hazardous dust. U.S. Sen. The Democratic senator’s letter comes as he faces a tough reelection battle. California officials say it’s unfair to use the lake as a bargaining chip.
