Malaysia's former leader Mahathir Mohamad congratulated his longtime rival and newly appointed prime minister Anwar Ibrahim on Twitter. The pair's on-off feuds have dominated the country's politics for the past two decades.
Gabungan Rakyat Sabah has agreed to join the unity government, said Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, adding that this meant his government will have a two-thirds majority in the Lower House.
The currency saw its largest single-day gain since March 2016 following Anwar Ibrahim's appointment, but observers believe the ringgit could trade back up by the end of the year.
