From 1 January 2023, smoke detectors will be mandatory in all homes in Luxembourg.
On 10 October, firefighters from the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) specialised in prevention will be present in about ten locations throughout Luxembourg to inform residents about the mandatory installation of smoke detectors.
Minister for Home Affairs Taina Bofferding reminded residents of this new regulation in a press conference today, stressing that “smoke detectors save lives!”.
International data confirms that smoke detectors reduce the number of victims in flat and house fires by a quarter. From January, they must be installed in bedrooms and stairwells.
A campaign was launched four years ago to raise public awareness.

Smoke detectors have already been compulsory in new buildings for two years. In residences with several flats, the owner or the syndicate of co-owners must ensure that detectors are installed in all flats.
Next Monday, 10 October, on the occasion of the World Prevention Day, the specialised fire brigades of the CGDIS will be present in ten locations throughout Luxembourg to inform about the mandatory installation of smoke detectors.
