The once-vagabond hawker centre has now found a permanent home
After a four-year stint at its interim locale right outside of Telok Ayer MRT, Market Street Hawker Centre has finally reopened at a permanent location. Nestled on the second and third levels of CapitaSpring just two minutes away from bustling Raffles Place MRT, this stylish hawker now showcases 56 stalls with capacious dining areas and thoughtful design. Straying away from the typical stuffy hawker environment, you’d be glad that you won’t be suffering from ugly sweat patches and nasty wet underarms after dining here.
The reopening comes right in time with the further easing of workplace restrictions and the great return back to the offices. While we were there, we saw hordes of people coming in and out in waves, bravely securing seats with their lanyards and queuing up at their favourite hawker delights. Truly a sight to revel in after two years.
Being one of the few CBD hawkers; Amoy Street Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat, and Maxwell Food Centre, we’d think that these are integral communal grounds where one could stretch their dollar and yet afford the luxury to choose from a wide variety of cuisines to fill up their bellies. Check out the generous plate of glistening roasted meats and a side of springy wonton noodles above by Tiong Bahru Roasted Noodle House, which only set you back a nifty $7.50.
Expect to feast on familiar favourites such as Tong Fong Fatt Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice, Tiong Bahru Wanton Mee, Market Street Nasi Lemak, Golden Nur Nasi Briyani, Ah Liang Ipoh Hor Fun, Yu Guo Curry Rice, Yummy Nyonya, and even the Golden Shoe Chicken Rice that’s been around since 1965.
For those who regularly get your morning caffeine fix at Sunrise Traditional Coffee and Toast, fret not, they aren’t going anywhere either.
Oh, if you’re not looking to pick up a hefty fine, do yourselves a favour and clean up after yourselves. There are dedicated Tray and Crockery Return stations that are tech-enabled to ease the load off on-site cleaners. During our visit, everyone was socially responsible which goes to show that it doesn’t hurt to collectively do our part in making the seniors’ lives a little easier.
On a brighter note, what felt like an eternity for the once-vagabond hawker centre has now found a real home. If you’re one of the many that work in the CBD, this surely comes as forward-looking news.
