The Reid family have opened their newest McDonald's restaurant in Mitchell.
Franchisees Rob and Michelle Reid welcomed an excited crowd on Friday after a ribbon cutting outside the Ontario Street location.
The Reids own a number of McDonald's restaurants throughout southwestern Ontario and, in fact, met while both were young employees at McDonald's.
Their son, Justin Reid, is about to take over as the franchisee in Goderich.
The Mitchell location has about 60 employees and they are looking for more.
Reid told StratfordToday before the opening that they enjoy doing business in small communities and getting to know citizens.
Reid worked with John Prober at his first McDonald’s restaurant in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland and worked in supervisory roles when Prober was a franchisee/owner in Stratford.
Kerry Prober, John’s daughter, is the current franchisee/owner at both Stratford locations, as well as New Hamburg and St. Marys, the latter of which recently opened.
Reid has been involved with McDonald's for 42 years. Canada had 1,452 McDonald’s restaurants in 2021.
McDonald's has started entering smaller markets in recent years, something they carefully considered before implementing. The Mitchell restaurant and other locations are setting up next to gas stations, for example, with smaller square footage but enough room to comfortably house guests.
The Mitchell location, attached to an existing Shell station on the east end, will seat 60 guests, with a drive-thru and full menu.
Reid said previously they will get involved with local organizations such as sports teams and hospitals, and with the added Mitchell restaurant, Ronald McDonald House Charities will benefit through local programs.
Reid is president of the board of directors for Ronald McDonald House Charities Southwestern Ontario.
$1 from every Happy Meal sold from April 28 to May 9 in Mitchell will be donated to RMHC SWO.
