Meet The Zoomers, a documentary that follows five Gen Z teens across the world, is an ambitious production. We filmed for six months, in five countries simultaneously, amidst a global pandemic, and a war… with teenagers – all of whom were struggling with their own unique challenges.

We needed to earn their permission and trust to capture the most intimate aspects of their lives, including their mobile phone activities. It was a tall order and a unique learning experience for the crew.

Our Indonesia producer Jessica Novia witnessed the demands on her 17-year-old profile, Bella, an aspiring professional gamer. “The most shocking thing was seeing how much hard work it takes to be a pro gamer. There is a strict schedule for intense training – like for professional athletes, with things like physical health, mental well-being and nutrition being considered.”

India producer Lolita S Lachica was inspired by the journey of 16-year-old doctor-in-the-making Kevin. “(Gen Zs) are trying to make it in a more competitive, more complex world, with more pressures than a Gen-Xer like me – and I commend how they respond with maturity and determination.”

Producer Janice Young, who helped tell 15-year-old Vladislav’s story amid the Ukraine war, said: “One of the more distressing things that happened was when my field director told me Russia was bombing them (in Kyiv) and that he must hide, while we were on the phone for a production meeting. Thankfully, he was safe.”

Zoomers. Their lives may have been upended by a pandemic and an invasion, but they are certainly not a lost generation.
