Twitter stated in a court filing that it planned to subpoena Senator Elizabeth Warren requesting communications regarding Twitter or its owner Elon Musk between her office and the Federal Trade Commission, as well as her office and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Warren was one of several Democratic senators who had urged the FTC to investigate Twitter’s privacy policies in the wake of the layoffs that happened soon after Elon Musk took over the social media giant last year, and to consider enforcement actions against executives if appropriate. Read more.

The U.S. Justice Department wants to intervene in a lawsuit by the NAACP aimed at blocking the creation of a separate court system and police department for the city of Jackson, Mississippi. State lawmakers enacted bills in April that created appointed, instead of elected, judgeships and prosecutor’s offices in Jackson, unlike other jurisdictions in Mississippi. The DOJ’s move adds heft to the NAACP’s claims that the laws were meant to intentionally discriminate against the city’s mostly-Black residents. Columnist Hassan Kanu writes that the DOJ’s bid represents the Biden administration’s most significant intervention thus far against nationwide efforts to limit democratic representation for minority communities.
