Microsoft employees earlier this year promised widespread raises to stop workers from leaving to competitors like Amazon and Meta.
Microsoft’s compensation increases sought to address growing dissatisfaction with compensation and stop employees from leaving to tech rivals like Amazon, which also promised significant raises earlier this year, two people familiar with the matter told Insider.
Still, some at the company recently told Insider the raises they received — in the range of 5% to 10%, according to five employees who shared pay information with Insider — weren’t enough to keep them around. What’s more, Microsoft has laid off employees and significantly paused hiring since then.
“Folks are underwhelmed,” one employee previously told Insider. The person expressed frustration that the size of the raise they received didn’t reflect the pace of inflation in the US. “We’ve been bleeding talent to Meta, and this was supposed to be a ‘significant’ adjustment.”
Though Microsoft doesn’t share how much it pays employees, it is required to disclose salary offers in work-visa applications submitted to the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification. Insider combed data from the office, which authorizes hiring non-US employees and then publicly releases the data.
The data doesn’t include stock grants that can significantly increase total compensation, but it is a valuable guide to Microsoft salaries for a variety of positions. Insider dug through the thousands of disclosed salaries that represent engineers, managers, and more.
The analyzed salaries from the second quarter of 2022 mainly represent workers in Washington, California, Georgia, and Texas. The highest-paid person in the data set was a business planner in California who was offered $310,000, while the lowest-paid person was a sales specialist in Washington who was offered $65,000.
Here’s a breakdown of what Microsoft pays many other employees, though these salaries were disclosed before the promised raises. The broad categories are taken from filings by the Office of Foreign Labor Certification. Roles are listed below only if there are at least three candidates.
