Fuelled by these questions, I went on a journey of discovery that involved riveting revelations across multiple countries.
My mission to understand the influence of popular culture took me to South Korea, the manufacturers of romantic K-dramas. Does reel romance impact our real-life expectations of love and romance?
I also looked at different approaches people took to finding a life partner. In India, where most unions are arranged, we crashed a “love marriage” to learn why marriage is regarded as a union of families and communities, and not just of two people.
But even if we get more people to fall in love and get married, there is no guarantee they would want to start a family. This brought us to Sweden, where gender-equal parenting is encouraged. I wanted to see if there were similar attitudes in Singapore. Could this be one solution to help raise our fertility rates?
Love Delayed is, at its core, a documentary on the universal desire for connection, and about the hurdles we overcome along the way.
