Florida Governor Ron DeSantis entered the battle for the 2024 presidential election during a glitch-filled online forum on Twitter hosted by its billionaire owner, Elon Musk.
DeSantis said little about his national vision for the country, but here’s a look at some of the bills the Florida governor has signed recently.
Abortion: DeSantis in April signed Florida’s six-week abortion ban, but it cannot take effect until the state Supreme Court rules on the constitutionality of the 15-week ban currently in place.
Death penalty: DeSantis signed a bill that authorized juries in capital cases to recommend the death penalty in the event that four jurors or fewer object. Florida joined Alabama as the only states where a unanimous jury decision is not required
DEI: DeSantis signed a bill banning tax dollars from being used in state colleges for diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
LGBTQ+: Following other Republican-led states, DeSantis last week signed a law that bans gender-affirming healthcare including puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender youth. A group of parents of transgender children have challenged the law. A Florida restaurant also sued DeSantis and the state this week to halt enforcement of a new law banning minors from attending drag performances. DeSantis’ “Don’t Say Gay” law was extended last month to ban classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation in all public school grades.
ESG: DeSantis has made one of the furthest-reaching efforts yet among Republicans against sustainable finance efforts, signing a bill earlier this month barring state officials from investing public money to promote ESG goals, and prohibiting ESG bond sales.
