LUXEMBOURG ELECTIONS – The Minister of Family Affairs, Corrine Cahen has estimated that 68,000 more residents are expected to be eligible to vote in municipal elections next year. The law requiring 5 years of residency in order to vote in local elections, was changed in this summer. Anyone can vote, regardless of their nationality and length of residence. This clause applies to all non-Luxembourg citizens, whether they are European or third-country nationals.
ITALY MIGRANTS – Luxembourg is among the countries that are taking in migrants from the rescue ship “ Ocean Viking”, which was able to dock in Toulon in France yesterday, after Italy refused. The volunteers on board had rescued 230 migrants from the Mediterranean, including 40 minors who are traveling alone. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, head of Italy’s most right-wing government in decades has said that other countries must should more of the burden for taking in the thousands of migrants trying to reach Europe from North Africa every year.
BELGIUM ATTACK – A Belgian police officer was killed in a knife attack in Brussels last night. Another officer was injured. The alleged perpetrator had earlier gone into another police station in the city to warn that he would try to attack police, but was not detained. According to local media, the man stabbed two officers, before being shot in the legs and abdomen by another police patrol arriving at the scene. One of the police officers died of his injuries and both the other wounded officer and perpetrator were hospitalised.
UKRAINE RECAPTURE – The President of Ukraine, Volodymr Zelensky says his forces have recaptured over 40 towns and villages in southern Ukraine. Locals cheered Ukrainian troops as they took back towns, north of Kherson which Russia said it was abandoning.
COP27 EMISSIONS REPORT – According to scientists at the COP27 climate summit in Egypt, carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels, the main driver of climate change, are on track to rise one percent in 2022 to reach an all-time high. Emissions from oil, fuelled by the continuing rebound in aviation, will likely rise more than two percent compared to last year, while emissions from coal will hit a new record. Global CO2 emissions from all sources will top out at 40.6 billion tonnes, just below the record level in 2019.
BASKETBALL EURO CUP – In womens’ basketball, T71 Dudelange lost the third group match in the Euro Cup last night with 69 to 84 against Benfica Lisbon. The team now have 4 points from the first 3 matches.
