LUXEMBOURG BUDGET – Finance Minister Yuriko Backes will present the 2023 budget to parliament this morning. This afternoon, ministers will debate the speech on the State of the Nation, which Prime Minister Bettel held yesterday. The main topics were the energy and climate crisis, the war in Ukraine and the pandemic.
G7 UKRAINE – Leaders of the G7 countries have said they will provide Ukraine with military and financial support as long as it takes, as they warned Russia against using weapons of mass destruction. The online meeting was addressed by President Zelensky, who called for further help for Kyiv to strengthen its air defence systems following 2 days of Russian missile attacks.The Ukraine crisis is also the subject of the meeting of the NATO defense ministers in Brussels today. Luxembourg is represented by Francois Bausch.
NASA ASTEROID – It’s a historic success. For the first time an asteroid has been redirected. Two weeks ago, NASA sent a probe to the cosmic object and changed its trajectory. NASA says it is proof that humanity can stop an incoming cosmic object from devastating life on earth.
CHARLES CORONATION – The coronation of King Charles III will take place on May 6 next year. This was announced by Buckingham Palace yesterday. Charles, will be formally crowned at London’s Westminster Abbey, following a long tradition dating back more than 900 years. The monarch’s wife, Queen Consort Camilla, will also be crowned
EXTRADITION SCHNEIDER – A French court has decided that Luxembourg businessman Frank Schneider can be extradited to the United States. The American judiciary accuses Schneider of being involved in a fraud case surrounding the cryptocurrency OneCoin. He faces up to 40 years in prison in the United States.
ANGELA LANSBURY DIES – One of the last remaining stars of Hollywood’s golden age, Angela Lansbury has died at the age of 96. She was best known for starring as the Television detective Jessica Fletcher in ‘Murder she wrote’. The British-born star was also a hugely successful stage actress, netting five Tony Awards. She is survived by 3 children, three grandchildren, plus five great grandchildren.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RESULTS – Among Champions League games last night – Real Madrid and Manchester City both found the going tough in the group stage but battled through to draws that were enough to qualify for the knockout stages. Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica also moved closer to the last 16 with a 1-1 draw. On a bad night for Italian titans, AC Milan played almost the whole match with 10 men as they lost at home to Chelsea.
TRACK CYCLING – The 2022 world track cycling championships get under way today near Paris. The Netherlands have become track cycling’s powerhouse in recent years, helped by their dominant men’s sprinters. Led by Harrie Lavreysen, the Dutch have won the last four men’s team sprint titles.
Today starts off somewhat brisk, although it’ll warm up as we go into the afternoon. Expect cloudy skies with sun peeking through, and dry conditions throughout the day. The morning’s temperatures start off cold at 2-4°C, rising to 15-17°C in the afternoon.
